Botulinum toxin, widely known as Botox, is a medication that temporarily relaxes specific muscles, softening expression lines on the forehead, between the brows and around the eyes (crow's feet).
At our office in El Poblado, Dr. Olga Gómez Montoya, a physician trained at the University of Antioquia, administers it in precise, conservative doses so you keep your natural expression. We also use it for medical purposes, such as excessive sweating or bruxism (teeth grinding).
Aesthetic medicine guided by medical judgment · El Poblado, Medellín
Botulinum toxin type A works by blocking the chemical signal (acetylcholine) that a nerve sends to a muscle to make it contract. By relaxing only the treated muscles, temporarily and in a controlled way, expression lines on the forehead, between the brows and around the eyes soften, and with regular treatments they may become less etched over time. The effect starts to show 5 to 10 days later and lasts 4 to 6 months on average, depending on the area and your body.
What are the benefits of botulinum toxin?
And during menopause?
Toxin softens the lines created by movement, but it does not replace the collagen lost during this stage. That is why, for many women, we combine it with collagen biostimulators, depending on the medical assessment.
Which botulinum toxin brands do we use?
We use three type A botulinum toxins, all authentic and registered with INVIMA (Colombia's national health products regulator):
The key is not the product, it is the hand and the judgment behind it: the right dose in the exact spot, so your face still looks like you.
Botulinum toxin is used in the upper face (forehead, frown lines and crow's feet), around the mouth, chin and jaw, on the neck, and for medical uses such as bruxism and excessive sweating. The dose differs for each area and is defined during your medical assessment.

02
Relaxes the corrugator and procerus muscles, which create the frown that can make you look tired or worried, for a more rested expression. See treatment
03
Softens the lines that form at the outer corners of the eyes when you smile by relaxing part of the orbicularis muscle, for a more rested look.

When the cause is muscular, minimal doses can reduce how much gum shows when you smile. During your medical assessment we determine whether this applies to you.
05
Relaxes the upper lip muscle for a subtle outward roll of the lip, without adding volume.
06
Softens the vertical lines above the upper lip with microdoses, preserving the natural movement of the mouth. It is often combined with other treatments, depending on the medical assessment.

When the masseter is prominent, relaxing it can slim the lower face and create a more oval contour. The change is gradual and becomes noticeable over a few weeks.
09
Relaxes the vertical bands of the platysma muscle and can improve jawline definition. This technique is known as the Nefertiti lift.
10
Superficial microdoses that can improve the look of pores, shine and texture.
11
In selected cases, superficial microdoses may help reduce redness and flushing as a complement to rosacea management. This is decided during your medical assessment.
12
Relaxes the masseter muscle and may help reduce tension and force when you clench your teeth. It complements, but does not replace, dental care.

Botulinum toxin is mainly used on the forehead, between the brows and on crow's feet. It is also used around the mouth, on the chin, jaw and neck, and for medical purposes in bruxism and excessive sweating. The area and dose are defined during your medical assessment.
The most common treatment: it softens the expression lines that form when you frown, raise your brows or smile, for a more rested face without losing your expression.
Marionette lines, lines above the upper lip (barcode lines), a dimpled chin (orange-peel chin), gums that show when you smile (gummy smile) and an upper lip that disappears when you smile (lip flip). This is an area for minimal doses, where anatomical knowledge makes the difference.

Lower-face contouring (masseter), neck bands (platysma), pores and shine (microbotox) and facial redness (rosacea), in selected cases. Each is decided case by case during your medical assessment.
Bruxism (clenching or grinding your teeth) and excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis) in the underarms, hands or feet. The toxin complements, but does not replace, the underlying dental or medical care.

“Less is more: the goal is for you to look rested, not different.”

Basic and advanced botulinum toxin treatment
Basic treatment · upper face. Forehead, frown lines and crow's feet. This is the most common treatment and the one with the most evidence; even so, the dose is tailored to the strength of your muscles and your expression.
Advanced treatment · lower face, neck and medical uses. Mouth, chin, gummy smile, lip flip, masseter, neck (platysma), microbotox, bruxism and hyperhidrosis. In these areas, choosing the wrong muscle can affect your smile or speech, so they demand minimal doses, precise anatomical knowledge and experience.
That experience comes down to something simple: the right doses, in precise points, aiming for natural results. And if your case needs something more, such as collagen biostimulators or hyaluronic acid, we'll tell you during your medical assessment.
We look at your face at rest and in motion, review your medical history and listen to what you want to achieve. That way we understand your expression before any treatment.
We define the areas, injection points, dose and the most suitable toxin for you (Botox®, Dysport® or Xeomin®). We show you the product and its INVIMA registration. Less is more: we aim for a natural look.
Quick, well-tolerated micro-injections with a very fine needle, done in just a few minutes. You get back to your day with simple instructions for the first few hours.
We review the result once the full effect is visible and make an adjustment or touch-up if needed. We'll let you know when to schedule your next session.
That is not our goal. We work with precise doses to soften lines while preserving your expression, and we see you again at 15 days in case an adjustment is needed. A good result shows in looking rested, not in being unable to move.
Botox® is the best-known brand name for botulinum toxin type A; Dysport® and Xeomin® also exist, and we use all three, authentic and registered with INVIMA. None is best in every case: their formulation and dosing differ, and we choose based on the area, your history and how you have responded before.
The effect starts to show 5 to 10 days later and is complete at around two weeks. On average it lasts 4 to 6 months, depending on the area, the dose and your metabolism. For excessive sweating, the effect usually lasts longer.
It is a quick procedure with very fine needles, and most patients describe it as a mild, brief discomfort; you may have a small mark or bruise that fades within a few days. For the first few hours, avoid lying down, massaging the area or doing intense exercise. You can return to your activities the same day.
It can happen. How long it lasts varies with the strength of your muscles, your metabolism, the area and the dose used, and an insufficient dose is a common cause. We review it at your follow-up and, if needed, adjust the dose or the brand at your next session. We avoid re-treating too early, because sessions spaced too closely can reduce the response.
Yes. These are medical uses of botulinum toxin. In bruxism, it reduces the force and tension of the masseter and complements the care you receive from your dentist; in excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis), it reduces sweat production in the treated area for several months.
There is no set age: it depends on your expression and how your lines are forming. Started at the right time and in low doses, it can help lines become less etched. There is no upper age limit either: during menopause it remains useful and is often combined with collagen biostimulators.
It is not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding, with an active infection in the area, with an allergy to any of its components, with certain neuromuscular diseases such as myasthenia gravis, or with certain medications. That is why a prior medical assessment is essential.
Botulinum toxin is a medication, and administering it is a medical procedure: it must be done by a physician, in a licensed medical office. Cosmetology works with non-invasive procedures, which do not include injectables. Medical training means knowing the anatomy, adjusting the dose, recognizing contraindications and managing an adverse effect if one occurs.
The cost depends on the areas, the units and the brand you actually need, and it is defined during your consultation so you are charged neither too much nor too little. Prices vary because there are different brands and laboratories, each with different costs, and because not every offer includes the same things. We use INVIMA-registered Botox®, Dysport® and Xeomin®, in a full dose, with a medical assessment and a medical follow-up at 15 days. Message us and we'll guide you.
