How to get rid of dark circles in Medellín: treatment based on the cause

Dark circles don't have a single cause. They can be dark under-eye circles caused by pigment, hollow under-eyes caused by loss of support beneath the eye, bluish circles from visible blood vessels, or skin that has grown thinner over the years. That's why not all of them are treated the same way, and not all of them need hyaluronic acid.

At her practice in El Poblado, Dr. Olga Gómez Montoya, physician and surgeon from the University of Antioquia, first identifies what is happening around your eyes and then chooses with you the most natural option so you look rested.

Types of dark circles and treatment

Why do dark circles appear and how are they treated?

Dark circles appear from a combination of factors: genetics, accumulated pigment, blood vessels showing through thin skin, and the loss of support beneath the eye over the years.

During menopause, falling estrogen levels reduce collagen and the skin around the eyes becomes thinner, which is why many women notice their dark circles become more pronounced at this stage. Fatigue, allergies and rubbing your eyes also play a role, but they are rarely the only cause.

  • Dark or blackish circles (pigment): medical peels for the eye area, such as mesopeel® eyecon or the Meline® Dark Circles protocol, and laser to even out skin tone, combined with depigmenting actives.
  • Hollow under-eyes: hyaluronic acid in selected patients, or gentle biostimulation with Juvelook® Soft to provide support progressively.
  • Bluish or purple circles (vascular): PDRN and skinboosters to improve skin thickness and quality, so the vessels are less visible. If there is blood-derived pigment (hemosiderin), a gentle peel such as Mandelac® T.
  • Thin or dehydrated skin: skinboosters for deep hydration and PDRN to support regeneration.
  • Lines from muscle contraction: botulinum toxin for crow's feet.
  • Several causes at once: a combined, staged plan.

Treating the right cause is what makes the result look natural. And when something can't be solved with aesthetic medicine, such as some prominent under-eye bags, we tell you honestly and refer you to the appropriate specialty.

Is dark circle treatment right for you?

  • People tell you that you look tired even when you've slept well.
  • You notice dark circles or a hollowness under your eyes.
  • The skin around your eyes looks thinner or has lost its glow.
  • You want a fresher look without changing your expression.
  • You prefer a medical assessment over a one-size-fits-all treatment.
Causes we assess

Types of dark circles: pigmented, hollow, bluish and thin-skin

There are different types of dark circles and they often overlap. These clues can help guide you, but only a medical assessment confirms which type you have and which treatment is right for you.

01

Dark or blackish circles (pigment)

How to recognize them: a brown or dark tone that stays the same even when you gently stretch the skin. How they are treated: specific medical peels for the eye area, such as mesopeel® eyecon, the Meline® Dark Circles depigmenting protocol, laser and depigmenting actives at home.

02

Hollow under-eyes (tear trough)

How to recognize them: a shadow under the eye that changes with the light and is more visible under overhead lighting. How they are treated: hyaluronic acid applied precisely and in conservative volumes, in selected patients, or progressive biostimulation with Juvelook® Soft.

03

Bluish or purple circles (vascular)

How to recognize them: a bluish, violet or reddish-brown tone, more visible in thin skin. How they are treated: PDRN and skinboosters to improve skin thickness and quality. When there is pigment coming from the blood (hemosiderin), a gentle peel such as Mandelac® T may be added.

04

Thin skin and loss of firmness in the lower eyelid

How to recognize it: thin, dehydrated skin with fine lines or less firmness under the eye. How it is treated: skinboosters, gentle biostimulation and technology to stimulate collagen progressively.

05

Crow's feet (lines from muscle contraction)

How to recognize them: lines that appear with the movement of smiling. How they are treated: botulinum toxin in conservative doses, preserving your expression.

06

Under-eye bags

How to recognize them: a puffiness that doesn't change with rest. How they are treated: we assess their origin honestly. Some can improve with aesthetic medicine; others require a surgical assessment and, in that case, we will refer you.

Our approach

Dark circle treatment with a natural approach

The eye area is delicate and highly expressive. Here, more than anywhere else, less is more: we want you to look rested and fresh, not different.

Dr. Olga Gómez Montoya follows a three-step method:

  • She assesses your eye area calmly to identify the cause of your dark circles.
  • She explains what is realistic in your case, without exaggerated promises or treatments you don't need.
  • She follows up with check-ups to review your progress.

We work in stages and with conservative amounts, because around the eyes it is better to adjust little by little than to correct an excess. We use only INVIMA-registered products (INVIMA is Colombia's health products regulator) from verified sources.

"The responsible thing is not to tell you 'it's this,' but to assess your eye area and choose with you the most natural option." — Dr. Olga Gómez Montoya

Step by step

What does dark circle treatment look like, step by step?

Medical assessment

We study your eye area, your skin and your medical history to identify what type of dark circles you have. If the treatment isn't right for you, we'll tell you.

A plan tailored to you

We define the right treatment or combination and how many sessions you might need depending on the cause. We explain what to expect, aftercare and possible side effects, without overselling.

Treatment

Before we begin, we show you the product and its INVIMA registration. We apply it with precise technique and in conservative amounts. Discomfort is usually mild, and temporary swelling or bruising may appear; we give you clear instructions for the following days.

Check-ups and follow-up

We do two check-ups, at 15 and 30 days, to see how your skin is evolving and adjust the plan if needed. Results in this area are progressive.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions about dark circles

How do you get rid of dark circles?

It depends on the cause. Dark circles caused by pigment are treated with medical peels for the eye area (mesopeel® eyecon, Meline® Dark Circles), laser and depigmenting agents; hollow under-eyes, with hyaluronic acid in selected patients or with gentle biostimulation such as Juvelook® Soft; bluish circles and thin skin, with PDRN and skinboosters. There is often more than one cause, which is why the plan is defined during the assessment.

Why do dark circles appear?

They usually have several causes at once: pigment, hollowness under the eye, visible blood vessels, thin skin, genetics, rest and the passage of time. During menopause the skin around the eyes becomes thinner and dark circles may become more noticeable. Since each cause is treated differently, the first step is to identify which one predominates in your case.

What treatment do I need for my dark circles?

It depends on the cause. Pigmented dark circles aren't treated the same way as hollow ones or those caused by thin skin. During the assessment we determine whether you need peels, laser, polynucleotides (PDRN), skinboosters, biostimulation with Juvelook® Soft, hyaluronic acid, botulinum toxin or a combination, starting with what is most noticeable. Before applying any product, we show you its brand and its INVIMA registration.

Which peel works for dark circles?

For the eye area, gentle peels designed for thin skin are used. At the practice we work with Mesoestetic's mesopeel® eyecon for pigmented dark circles, the Meline® Dark Circles depigmenting protocol and, when the pigment is of vascular origin, Mediderma's Mandelac® T. They don't work for hollow under-eyes, which need support. Learn more on our facial peel page.

What is Meline Dark Circles?

It is a depigmenting protocol from the Meline® laboratory designed for pigmented dark circles. It combines in-office applications with at-home care and is indicated only after the assessment confirms that the dark circles are pigmented, because with hollow or vascular dark circles it doesn't deliver the expected result.

What are hemosiderin dark circles?

They are reddish-brown or violet dark circles caused by iron residues from the blood that are deposited under the thin skin of the eyelid. They overlap with vascular and pigmented dark circles. They can improve with gentle peels such as Mandelac® T, which combines mandelic acid and thioglycolic acid, together with PDRN or skinboosters to thicken the skin. Improvement is gradual.

Are all dark circles treated with hyaluronic acid?

No. Hyaluronic acid can help with hollow under-eyes (tear trough), in selected patients and in conservative amounts. For pigmented or vascular dark circles it is not the first option, and when the skin is thin Juvelook® Soft may be considered. Applied in excess or too superficially, it can cause prolonged swelling or a bluish tint, which is why we assess the cause before proposing any treatment.

Can Sculptra or Radiesse be used for dark circles?

No. Sculptra® and Radiesse® are very useful collagen biostimulators for the face, but they are not indicated for the thin skin under the eye. When the eye area needs collagen stimulation, we consider gentler options such as Juvelook® Soft, PDRN or skinboosters.

Can under-eye bags be removed without surgery?

It depends on their origin. Some bags caused by fluid retention or loss of support can improve with aesthetic medicine. Prominent fat bags usually require eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty). In that case we tell you honestly and refer you to the appropriate specialty.

Does dark circle treatment hurt? Does it cause bruising?

Discomfort is usually mild and we use comfort measures. Afterwards, mild swelling or temporary bruising may appear, especially with injectable treatments, and it usually goes away within a few days. We give you clear aftercare instructions and, if you notice intense pain or changes in skin color, message us immediately.

When will I see results and how long do they last?

It depends on the treatment. These are the approximate times to start seeing changes:

  • Botulinum toxin: between 5 and 10 days.
  • Hyaluronic acid: around 15 days, once the swelling subsides.
  • Polynucleotides (PDRN): from the first month.
  • Juvelook® Soft: between 2 and 3 months, because it stimulates your own collagen progressively.

Duration varies depending on the product, the area and each person, which is why we don't promise an exact timeframe.

Are there check-ups after dark circle treatment?

Yes. We do two check-ups, at 15 and 30 days, to see how your skin is evolving and adjust the plan if needed. Follow-up is part of the treatment, because results around the eyes are progressive.

How do I know the product being applied is genuine?

Before we begin, we show you the product and its INVIMA registration. We use only products from verified sources. Always ask what will be applied, its brand and its registration, because a social media post doesn't prove that a product is genuine.

Do eye creams work for dark circles?

Some topical products help as a complement: they hydrate, improve skin quality and even out tone, especially with pigmented dark circles. But they don't correct hollowness or very thin skin, so they don't replace a medical treatment. During your consultation we tell you which products have evidence behind them for your case.

Who should not have dark circle treatment?

It is not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding, with active infection or inflammation in the area, with an allergy to the product's components, or if you take anticoagulants without medical supervision. Nor if you expect a radical change in a single session. That's why a prior assessment is essential.

How much does dark circle treatment with hyaluronic acid cost in Medellín?

It depends on the type of dark circles, the technique or combination indicated and the number of sessions, which is why we don't give a single price without an assessment. During your consultation in El Poblado we clearly explain the plan and its investment before you decide. Message us ASSESSMENT.
