Sculptra in Medellín: progressive collagen biostimulation

Sculptra® is poly-L-lactic acid, a collagen biostimulator: it doesn't fill, it stimulates your skin to produce its own collagen. That is why the change isn't visible the same day. It starts to show between 4 and 6 weeks and keeps improving for months, with a firm, natural result that doesn't change your features.

At our practice in El Poblado, Dr. Olga Gómez Montoya, physician and surgeon from the University of Antioquia, assesses whether Sculptra® is the right option for your skin or whether another treatment would serve you better. We only use original product registered with INVIMA (Colombia's health products regulator).

What it is

What is Sculptra and how does it work?

Sculptra® is made of microspheres of poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA), a biocompatible, resorbable material. It is reconstituted with sterile water and injected into the deep layers of the skin.

The water is reabsorbed within a few days. The microspheres, however, activate your skin cells (fibroblasts) to produce new collagen. That collagen is what provides firmness and support, which is why the result is progressive and looks like you.

A history of more than 20 years

It was approved in Europe in 1999 and in the United States in 2004, initially to treat facial fat loss due to medical causes. In 2009 it was approved for facial wrinkles, and in 2023 for cheek wrinkles. In Colombia it is distributed by Galderma, under INVIMA registration 2017DM-0017014.

Sculptra® is one of the collagen biostimulators we use at our practice.

Am I a candidate for Sculptra?

It's for you if…

  • You notice your skin is less firm or has less support.
  • Your cheekbones or temples have lost volume over the years.
  • Your skin changed with menopause or after weight loss.
  • You prefer a gradual change that isn't noticeable overnight.
  • You want to look fresh without looking filled.

It's not the right time if…

  • You are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • You have an active infection in the area.
  • You have an active autoimmune disease, a tendency to keloids or an allergy to any component.
  • You are looking for an immediate result or more volume in your lips.
Areas

Where is Sculptra applied?

The areas are chosen at the assessment based on your skin and your structure. It is not applied to the lips or around the eyes.

Comparison

Sculptra or another treatment?

Sculptra® is not the answer to everything. Here is how it differs from other options we also use:

01

Sculptra® or hyaluronic acid

Hyaluronic acid filler (Juvéderm®, Restylane®) gives immediate volume in a specific spot. Sculptra® doesn't fill: it stimulates collagen and gradually improves firmness over a broad area. They are often combined.

02

Sculptra® or Radiesse®

Radiesse® (calcium hydroxylapatite) provides support from the moment it is applied and then stimulates collagen. Sculptra® only stimulates, so its change is slower and more progressive. The choice depends on the area and what you are looking for.

03

Sculptra® or Juvelook®

Juvelook® combines poly-D,L-lactic acid with hyaluronic acid and is used mainly for skin quality and texture. Sculptra® is used more for firmness and support.

04

Sculptra® in combination

With Liftera® 2 HIFU, botulinum toxin or hyaluronic acid when the face needs more than one thing. The combined plan is defined at the assessment.

Medical honesty

What can and can't Sculptra achieve?

What it can do

  • Improve skin firmness and support.
  • Restore lost volume gradually and naturally.
  • Improve skin density and quality.
  • A result that lasts for months or years.

What it can't do

  • Show the final result the same day.
  • Add volume to the lips.
  • Replace a facelift when laxity is significant.
  • Be reversed with an enzyme, as is possible with hyaluronic acid.

Safety

Sculptra with medical judgment and original product

With Sculptra®, technique matters as much as the product. Dilution, depth and amount define the result and reduce the risk of nodules. That is why it is applied in a medical office, with a plan and follow-up visits.

  • Original product: we show you the lot number and INVIMA registration before applying it.
  • Conservative amounts: we prefer two well-planned sessions over a single overloaded one.
  • Clear instructions: at-home massage, aftercare and warning signs in writing.

Dr. Olga Gómez Montoya has performed more than 8,500 botulinum toxin, biostimulator and lip harmonization treatments at her practice in El Poblado.

Step by step

What does Sculptra treatment look like, step by step?

Medical assessment

The doctor reviews your skin, your facial structure, your medical history and what you want to achieve. If Sculptra® isn't right for you, she tells you.

Product preparation

Sculptra® is reconstituted with sterile water and left to hydrate before application, following the manufacturer's protocol. This dilution is key to reducing the risk of nodules. We show you the product, its lot number and its INVIMA registration.

Application

Micro-injections with a needle or cannula, 45 to 60 minutes, under local anesthesia. There may be swelling or bruising for a few days. At home, you massage the area as instructed.

Sessions and follow-up

Usually 2 to 3 sessions, 4 to 6 weeks apart. We review your progress at follow-up visits and define maintenance.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions about Sculptra

What is Sculptra?

Sculptra® is the brand name for poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA), a collagen biostimulator made by Galderma. It is not a filler: it consists of resorbable microspheres that stimulate your skin to produce its own collagen. That is why the change is gradual and natural. In Colombia it holds INVIMA registration 2017DM-0017014.

What is Sculptra used for?

To improve skin firmness and support when it loses collagen over the years, with menopause or after weight loss. It is used mainly on the cheekbones, temples, jawline, folds and for skin quality. It is not meant for immediate volume or for the lips.

When are Sculptra results visible?

The volume in the first few days is the water from the preparation, and it disappears within a few days. Real changes start to show between 4 and 6 weeks and keep improving until around the sixth month, as your skin forms new collagen.

How long does Sculptra last?

It depends on your skin and the protocol. In the pivotal study, with 233 patients, the correction lasted up to 25 months. Since collagen keeps being lost over the years, we usually suggest maintenance about every two years.

What does the scientific evidence say about Sculptra?

A randomized clinical trial published in 2024 in the Journal of Drugs in Dermatology found that, at 12 months, 71.6% of treated patients showed improvement in cheek wrinkles, compared with 26.1% in the control group. This is solid evidence, although overall the quality of studies on PLLA is still moderate.

Sculptra or Radiesse: which is better?

Neither is better for everyone. Radiesse® provides support from the moment it is applied and stimulates collagen; Sculptra® only stimulates, with a more gradual change. The choice depends on the area, your skin and what you are looking for, and sometimes they are combined. We decide at the assessment.

Can Sculptra cause nodules or lumps?

Yes, it can happen. Papules or nodules under the skin are the most commonly reported adverse effect and are mainly associated with insufficient dilution. We reduce that risk with the correct dilution and depth, conservative amounts, not applying it to the lips or around the eyes, and with at-home massage. If you notice a lump, message us.

How do I know if my Sculptra is original?

Ask to see the product before it is applied, with its lot number and INVIMA registration. INVIMA issued a health alert (448-2023) about the unauthorized sale of Sculptra on social media. At our practice we only use product purchased through the official channel.

How should I interpret Sculptra before-and-after photos?

A photo doesn't predict your result. Lighting, angle, expression, time elapsed and other combined treatments change what you see. Look for photos taken under the same conditions and at least 3 to 6 months after the last session. At your assessment, we explain what is realistic in your case.

How much does Sculptra cost in Medellín?

It depends on the number of vials and sessions your skin needs, and that varies a lot from one person to another. That is why we don't give a price without assessing you. At your assessment in El Poblado, we explain the plan and its investment clearly. Message us CANDIDATE.
