Medical Facial Peels in Medellín: What They Are, Types and Uses

A facial peel renews the superficial layers of the skin in a controlled way to improve radiance, texture, pores and dark spots. We work with medical peels from Mesoestetic® (Cosmelan®, Dermamelan®, mesopeel®), Mediderma® and Meline®, and each one has its own indication.

Dr. Olga Gómez Montoya, physician and surgeon from the University of Antioquia, chooses the peel according to your skin, your phototype and your goal, with special care for olive skin and melasma.

What it is

What is a peel and how does it work?

A peel applies an acid or another medical-grade substance to the skin that loosens the bonds between the most superficial cells. Those cells shed over the following days, and the skin underneath looks brighter, more even and smoother.

Depth changes the effect and the recovery: a superficial peel works on radiance and pores with a few days of peeling; a depigmenting peel works on dark spots with a longer protocol. That's why which one is used, and who prescribes it, really matters.

What is it for?

  • Dark spots and melasma, as part of a plan.
  • Dull or lackluster skin.
  • Visible pores and uneven texture.
  • Mild acne and superficial marks.
  • Sun damage on the face, neck, décolletage and hands.

Which peels do we use?

  • Depigmenting: Cosmelan® and Dermamelan® (Mesoestetic), Meline® (with formulas for fair skin and for darker skin), mesopeel® melanostop tranex and Melaspeel®.
  • Sensitive or darker skin: mandelic acid (Mandelac®), lactic acid (Lactipeel®) and Argipeel®.
  • Acne, oiliness and pores: salicylic acid (Salipeel®), pyruvic acid (Pyruvic Peel) and mesopeel® blemiskin.
  • Anti-aging and texture: mesopeel® Jessner Pro, Ferulac® (low-concentration TCA with ferulic acid) and retinol peels (Yellow Peel).
  • Eye and lip area: mesopeel® eyecon and Dubai Lips Peel; for pigment-related dark circles, also the Meline® Dark Circles protocol.

Is a peel right for me?

Indications

What are peels used for?

Each indication has its own peel. Tap each one to see the page that explains it in detail.

01

Dark spots and melasma

Depigmenting peels such as Cosmelan®, Dermamelan®, Meline® or mesopeel® melanostop tranex, within a melasma plan. See dark spots and melasma.

02

Dull skin

They renew the surface layer and bring radiance back to lackluster skin. See skin quality.

03

Pores and texture

Salicylic and pyruvic acid to refine pores and control sebum, sometimes together with microneedling.

04

Acne and marks

They help control mild acne and improve superficial marks. Deep scars need other treatments: see acne scars.

05

Pigment-related dark circles

For pigment-related dark circles we use treatments specific to the eye area, such as the mesopeel® eyecon peel or the Meline® Dark Circles depigmenting protocol. See dark circles.

06

Neck, décolletage and hands

Sun damage also shows on the neck, décolletage, hands and lips (Dubai Lips Peel). See neck and décolletage and hands.

Safety

Peels guided by medical judgment, especially in olive skin

With peels, stronger is not better. Many dark spots after a peel come from poorly prepared skin, an overly aggressive acid or too little sunscreen.

That's why, before any session, we review your phototype and your history of dark spots, prepare the skin when needed and choose the gentlest peel that achieves the goal. If another technique, such as CO2 laser or microneedling, suits you better, we'll tell you.

After the peel

  • Gentle cleanser and moisturizer recommended by the doctor.
  • Don't pull off peeling skin.
  • Sunscreen every day and no direct sun.
  • No retinoids or exfoliants until the skin recovers.

“The best peel is the gentlest one that achieves the goal.” — Dr. Olga Gómez Montoya

Step by step

What does a peel session look like, step by step?

Medical assessment

The doctor reviews your skin, your phototype, whether you have melasma, acne or sensitivity, and your medications. She determines whether a peel is right for you and which one.

Preparation

Depending on the peel, we prepare the skin a few weeks beforehand with actives and sunscreen, so it responds better and with less risk of dark spots.

Session

The skin is cleansed and the peel is applied for the indicated time. You may feel mild burning or itching, which is managed during the session.

Aftercare and follow-up

We give you written aftercare instructions. The skin peels finely and we review your progress before the next session.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions about facial peels

What is a facial peel?

It's a treatment that applies a substance, almost always a medical-grade acid, to renew the superficial layers of the skin in a controlled way. As the old cells shed, the skin looks brighter, more even and smoother.

What is a chemical peel?

It's a peel that uses acids or other chemical substances to exfoliate the skin. Depending on its depth it can be superficial, medium or deep. At our office we use superficial and depigmenting peels, with acids such as glycolic, mandelic, salicylic, pyruvic, lactic or low-concentration TCA, which involve little downtime.

What types of peels are there?

By depth: superficial, which act on the outermost layer; medium, which reach a little deeper; and deep, which are rarely used today because of their recovery and risks. By goal, there are peels for radiance, for acne and pores, and depigmenting peels for dark spots and melasma.

What is Cosmelan and what is it for?

Cosmelan® is a depigmenting protocol from Mesoestetic laboratories for dark spots and melasma. A mask is applied in the office and left on for several hours depending on your skin, followed by a cream at home. Dermamelan® is a similar protocol from the same laboratory, and Meline® offers depigmenting formulas adapted to each phototype.

Which peels do you use at the office?

We work with medical peels from Mesoestetic® (Cosmelan®, Dermamelan® and the mesopeel® line: Jessner Pro, melanostop tranex, blemiskin and eyecon), from Sesderma's Mediderma® (Mandelac®, Pyruvic Peel, Melaspeel®, Salipeel®, Ferulac®, Lactipeel®, Argipeel® and retinol peels) and from Meline®. We choose the right one based on your skin, your phototype and your goal.

Do peels work for melasma?

They can help as part of a plan, along with sun protection and depigmenting agents at home. But melasma has no definitive cure: it is controlled. A poorly indicated or overly aggressive peel can make it worse, which is why it is chosen carefully.

How many days does the peeling last?

It depends on the peel. Mild redness and fine peeling for 3 to 7 days is typical. With depigmenting peels it can be more visible. During those days you shouldn't pull off the skin or expose yourself to the sun.

Are peels safe for darker or olive skin?

Yes, with sound judgment. Olive and darker skin has a higher risk of dark spots after a peel, so we prepare the skin beforehand, choose gentler peels and are strict about sunscreen.

Which peel is best for darker or olive skin?

The gentlest, slow-penetrating peels, such as mandelic acid, lactic acid or depigmenting formulas designed for higher phototypes, like Meline® Ethnic Skin or Melaspeel® K. They are combined with prior skin preparation and strict sunscreen use to reduce the risk of dark spots.

What is an ultrasonic peel?

It's a cleansing done with a vibrating spatula that helps remove impurities and dead cells. It isn't a medical chemical peel: its effect is more superficial. It can be a good complement, but it doesn't replace a peel prescribed by a physician.

Who should not have a peel?

It isn't recommended during pregnancy, with irritated, tanned or wounded skin, with active cold sores, or if you are taking or recently took isotretinoin. That's why a prior assessment is essential.

How much does a facial peel cost in Medellín?

It depends on the type of peel and the number of sessions your skin needs. During the assessment in El Poblado we clearly explain the plan and its investment. Message us EVALUATE.
